A Glimpse into the World of Gemstones
4 November 2015
The door to the beautiful and
fascinating world of precious and semi-precious stones gemstones was opened
for Duddenhoe Enders by international gemstones trader, Jason Middleton.
The talk was arranged because a few people in the village had expressed an interest in learning more about the subject and we were delighted that the topic appealed to several more.
Jason has spent 13 years in this glittering environment, buying gems on the worldwide market and selling them to high end jewellers. He described the six main gemstone families, where stones are mined, how they are cut, polished and, sometimes, treated and their principal properties.
There were slides of some of the most famous jewels in history but the audience was most impressed by the array of minerals and beautifully polished gemstone beads that were handed around for closer examination.
Citrine, amethyst, lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye and peridot were much admired but sadly, had to be handed back at the end of this absorbing evening.
Proceeds from the event were donated to the village hall which is currently in fundraising mode so that the exterior of the building can be refurbished.
